Born and raised in the Midwest, Kenna James always had a knack for pursuing
unconventional career paths. He studied drama in college and eventually moved
to Los Angeles to become an actor. While he found some success and appeared
in a number of television shows and theater productions, he didn’t exactly
support himself through the traditional jobs of bartender or waiter; he became
a poker dealer at Hollywood Park Casino.
When
Kenna wasn’t dealing cards, he was playing low limit hold’em games,
slowly moving up and working toward a promotion to tournament director. By 1996,
acting took a back seat to what was becoming a lucrative career in the poker
industry, and he began entering tournaments around the Southern California area.
With a number of wins in smaller events in California casinos, his motivation
and ever-increasing poker skills kept him moving in the right direction to become
a poker pro. During his stint at Hollywood Park, he also met Marsha Waggoner,
a long-time poker pro who would eventually become his wife. Together, they began
organizing and directing poker tournaments around the world, even as far away
as Moscow, Russia.
Kenna’s
first tournament wins began in 2002 and have been increasing in payouts and
prestige ever since. In 2003, he won the $2500 no-limit hold’em event
at the Bellagio Five Diamond World Poker Classic, and he finished in ninth place
at the 2004 WPT Doyle Brunson North American Poker Championship during the Festa
al Lago series. In 2005, he made it to the final table on the World Poker Tour
at the Legends of Poker tournament and finished second. His run continued with
a final table at the Monte Carlo Millions and the Aussie Millions main events.
Kenna’s positive attitude and generous nature keep him striving for success
at the poker tables while taking the time to participate in numerous charity
events, in addition to working on several books about playing good poker and
living a good life. It seems that he has only begun to make his mark on the
poker world.
