Some personalities are
just suited for poker. It’s a game that requires smooth, scientific concentration.
It’s a game that requires an unexplainable “feel.” And sometimes
it’s a game that requires brute force. So, look at Lee Watkinson. If he
could name any two of his interests that are greater than poker, they would
be surfing and wrestling. That is, he’s a man who can put a board under
his feet, find the perfect wave, ride it with that unexplainable “feel”
and then somehow summon some sense of brutal aggressiveness and apply it to
the science of poker.
As the poker waves started
in the 100-year storm that became the recent poker craze, Lee seems to have
caught the perfect wave. It seemed every time you looked up in 2004, Lee was
sitting at a final table. And on top of all that Lee is humble about it. “What
you see is what you get” Lee says. “I just try to always be thinking
out there and do the best I can.” The economics graduate who splits his
poker time between the Bellagio, the Commerce Club, and the tournament circuit
has been playing poker since high school. And when asked what he does for a
living, he’ll muse, “Thinking it might be poker.” And chances
are, he won’t have to think too much longer about that.
And what a wave it's been
in poker. With dual second place finishes in the Season Three Legends of Poker
at the Bicycle Casino $578,375 and the inaugural Mirage Poker Showdown $513,
038, Lee served notice that everyone else should be on their toes. His other
big payday was a $270,000 second place finish in the 2004 World Series.
