Season 2 of the WPT ended with the final table
of the WPT Championship event at the beautiful Bellagio Hotel and Casino in
Las Vegas, Nevada, April 23, 2004.
343 players congregated at the epicenter of
poker, paying $25,000 each to take their shot at the richest prize pool in the
biggest poker game in history – $8,342,000. Among them were the 13 winners
of this season’s 14 WPT events – Player of the Year Erick Lindgren
won twice – as well as four Hollywood Home Game champions. With the winner
walking away with nearly $2,700,000, you’ll understand why it took five
grueling days of qualifying to determine the final six. The final 6 players:
In Seat 1, WPT regular Hasan Habib, with $2,605,000
in chips.
In Seat 2, former software developer Steve Brecher, with $1,460,000.
In Seat 3, Stockholm pro Martin de Knijff, the chip leader with $4,375,000.
In Seat 4, 22 year old UC Santa Barbara student Richard Grijalva, with $2,995,000.
In Seat 5, Maryland real estate attorney Russell Rosenblum, the short stack
with $1,178,000.
In Seat 6, 26 year old Yale grad and writer, Matt Matros, with $3,860,000.
Martin de Knijff was crowned the WPT Champion along with $2,728,356 and Hasan
Habib, for his 2nd place finish, left with a payday of $1,372,223! Befitting
a fine second season, it was the largest prize pool in the history of poker,
and the single largest first prize of any sporting event in the history of North
America.

As of Season 6 the WPT has moved to the Game Show Network, therefore, all WPT
poker memorabilia with the Travel Channel logo printed next to it is a rare
collector’s item and should be cherished.
